Three-phase model of an overhead power transmission line 360 km long, voltage 380 kV and current 1000 A.
Two Phase Flow occurs when a gas is flowing in a confined space with a liquid. The flow profile and geometry in this instance varies widely as a function of the liquid and gas material properties as well as the flow rates through the pipeline. The Two Phase Flow Demonstrator apparatus is a small scale flow loop that can demonstrate Two Phase Flow phenomena in pipes at a variety of liquid and gas flow rates. It is important that the process operator understand the basics of Two Phase Flow Demonstrator in pipelines, especially as it pertains to the formation of the destructive slug flow regime. Certain flow regimes can be destructive to facility piping, and should be avoided where possible. The destructive effects of these flow regimes can be managed through the use of various piping geometries.
The air and water flow rates are continuously variable over a wide range of flow rates. This allows the operator to observe a wide range of two-phase flow regimes using this demonstrator. The Two Phase Flow Demonstrator is mounted on a movable cart for ease of movement and storage. Two Phase Flow Demonstrator uses air and water to create different flow regimes in the process piping. Air is supplied to the system by a low pressure blower, and water is supplied through a centrifugal pump.
The primary separation operation for crude oil occurs when the crude stream flows through a vessel of sufficient capacity to allow gravity separation of the gas, liquid hydrocarbon and water phases. The three phase separator demonstration apparatus is a small scale vessel that performs continuous separation of a mixture of oil, air and water. The process has manual control valves with rotameters and is intended to demonstrate oilfield separation principles with basic visual manual operation. It is available in horizontal and vertical orientations. This trainer includes a clear horizontal primary separator vessel.
Function:
This fluid mixture then flows into a separator vessel fabricated of clear materials. This process trainer blends air, water and refined oil to emulate a crude oil stream. The oil and water are recycled; the air is vented to atmosphere.
Well Bore Hydraulic Demonstrator is designed to replicate many of the hydraulic conditions encountered in drilling operations. The Well Bore Hydraulic Demonstrator is a valuable tool for training process operators. These conditions are produced in a replica well-bore manufactured from industrial clear PVC that allows students to observe the flow patterns.
The Well Bore Hydraulic Demonstrator is equipped with process indication and manual control devices including metering valves and pressure gauges. Oil water and air represent the three common well-bore fluids liquid hydrocarbons, gaseous hydrocarbons, and produced water. The process fluids are recycled allowing for continuous operation without the discharge of either the oil or the water. The Well Bore Hydraulic Demonstrator is controlled by manually adjusting the various flow control valves.
Function:
The operator has control over several aspects of the flow inside the well-bore; the flow direction fluid flow rates, and the distance that the tubing is above the bottom of the hole. Throughout the well servicing and well production phases, the operator will create different flow patterns in the well-bore. The operator must balance these parameters to successfully achieve:
Containment of hydrocarbon-contaminated water
Control liquid flow rates
Positive control of well pressure
Safe Drilling and Servicing Operations
Containment of gas and liquid kicks
Temperature and flow data obtained can be used to calculate energy balance, heat transfer and heat transfer coefficients.
A valve is provided to reverse the tube-side flow direction. The two exchangers are of similar surface area but with unique design features. The Heat Exchanger Demonstrator consists of two heat exchangers with associated temperature indicators, flow indicators and a temperature indicating controller.
Plate exchanger with stainless steel plates
Single pass shell and tube exchanger brass
Function:
The Heat Exchanger Demonstrator is connected to hot and cool tap water. Trainees select exchanger type, flow direction and flow rate then read and record the flows and temperatures for further analysis. Process (hot) water flow is manually controlled. Cooling water flow may be either manually controlled or automatically controlled to a selected process temperature set-point.

Pipeline Pigging Demonstrator shows the student operator the concept of a pipeline pig moving through a pipeline including the steps required to prepare the pipeline for the pig, insert the pig and remove the pig from the pipeline. The Pipeline Pigging Demonstrator apparatus is a small scale model of a pipeline that includes a pig launching station, a short pipeline and a pig receiving station. The Pipeline Pigging Demonstrator has no process instrumentation as it is intended to demonstrate oilfield operating principles with basic visual manual operation only. Most of the components of this demonstrator are fabricated from clear plastic materials in order to allow the student operator to visualize how the pig moves through this representative pipeline system.
Function:
A pig launching station is used to insert the pig into a pipeline using a series of valves and hatches. The pig is pushed through the pipeline by the liquid or gas stream to the pig receiving station. The pig catching station works in opposite to the pig launching station. Pipeline Inspection Gauges (or Pigs) are used for pipeline cleaning, inspection and maintenance, and fluid batching in pipelines. These tools are pushed along the inside of a pipeline by the flow of liquid or gas.
The column demonstration apparatus is a small scale vessel that models the operation of a gas contactor or distillation column using air and water as working fluids. Column staging internals show:
Tray columns using sieve, valve and bubble-cap trays
Packed columns using both random and structured packing
Function:
The process has manual control valves with rotameters and is intended to demonstrate contactor distillation principles with basic visual manual operation.
Gas Contactor Distillation Column Demonstrator process uses air and water to emulate column dynamics. Water is recycled; the air is vented to atmosphere.
