Four flowmeters are described below which operate on the principle of either head loss, impulse or velocity. A fifth flowmeter, Rotameter working on the variable area principle, is described separately in the Hydraulics Bench leaflet. The measurement of flow rate is a fundamental topic to which a considerable degree of attention has been paid with the result that there are flow meters available using a wide variety of principles. Chosen five types of flowmeter, which are all in common industrial use, to provide experiments in comparative flow measurement.
Experimental Capabilities:
Establishment of the relationship that flow is proportiona to the square root of the pressure drop between entry and the venturi throat.
Observation of degree of pressure recovery at the end of the divergent section of the Venturi Tube.
Demonstration of use of Venturi Tube as a water flow meter and determination of the flow coefficient.
It can be fed from our Hydraulic Bench or from the mains and it allows, by making use of different weirs, to carry out experiments on the open channels. The Flow Visualization Mini Channel unit, made of transparent plexiglas, allows to study the behaviour of a water flow in a channel of small dimensions. An ink jet device allows to visualize the water flow around the models.
....Boundary layer studies involve the determination of the thickness of this layer and the velocity profile within it. These parameters will vary with velocity of the fluid flowing over the surface, the distance from the leading edge of the surface and the degree of roughness of the surface. When a fluid flows adjacent to a stationary surface, e.g. down a tube, the fluid immediately in contact with the stationary surface will have zero velocity. The resulting shear forces in this area will be significant and lead to high values of drag forces between the flowing and stationary surface. As a result there will be a comparatively steep velocity gradient associated with the adjacent boundary layer of the fluid. Boundary Layer Experiment accommodates these studies.
Experimental Capability:
Boundary layer growth on smooth and rough surfaces
To determine the velocity profile of the boundary layer at different distances from the sharp leading edge of a smooth test plate
To determine the velocity profile of the boundary layer at specified distances from the blunt leading edge of a smooth test plate
Experiments:
Simultaneous control of speed and tension
Independent control of speed and tension
The flexible design of the equipment allows the user to develop many other analysis and control exercises to suit their needs. It is good for extended or advanced control experiments, and is ideal for student project work.
Practical methods of controlling multi-variable electro- mechanical systems.
The applied force is captured on the digital display along with the revolution count of the specimen. Both values can be reset and zeroed (tared) prior to the testing commencing. When failure occurs, a microswitch stops the motor and the cycles to failure are registered on the digital display. A 2800rpm motor rotates a specimen through a gear and pulley arrangement between 5600 or 1425 rpm. The specimens are held within chucks and loaded using a cantilever arrangement, with the load being applied through a screw jack mechanism with integral cantilever load cell. This Rotating Fatigue Machine Digital Apparatus has been designed to introduce students to the effects of material fatigue using a sinusoidal variation of bending stress. The count remains when the motor is not running and the ability to reset the counter has been designed in. Through an appropriate spreadsheet software printing and manipulation of data can be completed.Specially machined necked test specimens are provided in steel. A safety guard shields all rotating parts. The digital display incorporates a usb socket, which allows a host computer to be connected to the. The software supplied with the allows the capture and reviewing of data. These have a 4mm nominal neck diameter and are held in the unit using collect chucks. All tooling is provided to allow the removal and fitting of these specimens.

The single-use, User-programmable Temperature Data Logger (UTDL) with a Bluetooth interface for data download, analysis and programming of device settings via a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone.
Device settings, such as alarm thresholds, logging interval etc., can be programmed by the user via the free mobile application using a smartphone or factory programmed. The device is supplied unprogrammed by default and if factory-programmed settings is required, device settings need to be specified upon ordering.
The device shows any temperature alarms that have occurred via LED indicators.
When connected to a smartphone via the Bluetooth interface, the device generates a report via the free mobile application. Data is then uploaded and archived via the smartphone’s internet connection to the web application (accessible on the internet web browser of a PC or Mac). Reports and data can be exported from the web application in PDF or CSV file formats.
