Air Flow Studies Apparatus

Boundary layer growth is determined by the measurement of the velocity profile at four stations along the pipe using a traversing Pitot tube.
A bend or mitred cascade elbow may be fitted mid way along the smooth wall pipe for comparison of pressure losses.
Air enters the smooth walled pipe through one of the two flow measurement nozzles provided. Pressure tappings along the length of the pipe permit the pressure gradient to be determined.
The equipment includes a long smooth walled pipe joined to the suction side of an electrically operated  centrifugal fan. The fan discharge pipe terminates in a flow control damper for closed conduit work or a plate containing a small aperture for jet dispersion measurements.
A conventional flow measuring orifice plate is supplied for installing in the pipe upstream of the fan for additional demonstrations of pressure loss and recovery.
The equipment is mounted on a floor standing steel frame with an adjacent support for the extended suction pipe. Pressure measurements are made on a multi-tube inclinable manometer mounted on the support frame.
Air jet studies are carried out on the discharge side of the fan. A Pitot tube is traversed vertically and horizontally at different distances from the discharge orifice to investigate the dispersion properties.

Orifice plate The use of anorifice plate to measure flow is demonstrated by measuring the pressure dropacross a defined orifice. The geometry of the orifice is in accordance with standard industrial orifice flow meters.
Venturi Meter : Used to demonstrate Bernoull is equation, showing how low pressure is generated in the throat of aventure tube, and how this is affected by flow. Thegeometry of the venturi orifice is in accordance with standard industrial venturi flow meters, so the use of a venturi to measure flow can also bedemonstrated. The Two Phase Flow Demonstrator apparatus is a small scale flow loop that can demonstrate Two Phase Flow phenomena in pipes at a variety of liquid and gas flow rates. It is important that the process operator understand the basics of Two Phase Flow Demonstrator in pipelines, especially as it pertains to the formation of the destructive slug flow regime. Certain flow regimes can be destructive to facility piping, and should be avoided where possible. The destructive effects of these flow regimes can be managed through the use of various piping geometries. 
The air and water flow rates are continuously variable over a wide range of flow rates. This allows the operator to observe a wide range of two-phase flow regimes using this demonstrator. The Two Phase Flow Demonstrator is mounted on a movable cart for ease of movement and storage. Two Phase Flow Demonstrator uses air and water to create different flow regimes in the process piping.
