The unit consists of two vessels connected by a large bore pipe and valve together with an integral air pump. A small scale bench top accessory designed to allow experimental investigation of the first law of thermodynamics using the perfect gas law and the expansion of air. Additional valves allow the vessels to be used in isolation; venting to or from atmosphere and in a combined arrangement where the pressurised vessel can vent into the evacuated vessel. The pump can be used to both pressurise one vessel and evacuate the other.

Servo systems are closed-loop control systems. In many industrial applications it is often required to convert small mechanical motions into a different motions with increased force. The displacement of the carriage is established using a potentiometric position sensor and compared against the reference variable. The control deviation is processed in a separate servo amplifier. Hydraulic systems are particularly suitable for applications where large actuation forces are required. The unit allows the operation of a hydraulic servo system to be investigated in detail. A carriage with a mass of 50kg is moved by a hydraulic cylinder. Additional springs and an adjustable hydraulic damper permit static and dynamic loads to be simulated. The trainer is a mobile unit. Measuring devices can be housed in the built-under cabinet unit. Depending on the direction of the deviation, a control valve is activated in forward or reverse direction, which in turn produces a corresponding movement of the hydraulic cylinder and the carriage.

The working principle of the apparatus is the following an air flow generated by a centrifugal fan enters a tunnel passing through a fluid thread rectifier. Simplicity and clearness are the fundamental requirements that permit the teacher and students to operate without having to deal first with complicated utilization procedures. As the air passes through the tunnel it undergoes a series of treatments, until it arrives in the last chamber which represents the environment to be conditioned. Before this last stage, it may be pre-heated and moisturized by water diffusers, to experiment on heating environments and to have the opportunity to vary as many parameters as possible for a complete study on air conditioning. The flow is pre-heated, then moisturized by steam diffusers it is cooled through the evaporator and sent to the final chamber.

A bed of granular medium (usually sand, but other materials can be used such as Ballotini or anthracite) is placed in a readily demountable tube through which water can be made to flow in either a downwards or upwards direction.
The test section tube and all tubing connections are transparent so that operation can be observed and the presence of air bubbles easily detected. All metal fittings are corrosion resistant.
Pressure drop across the bed can be measured either by a 0.5m length water differential manometer or a 0.5m length Mercury manometer (see recommended accessories), depending on the magnitude. Valves are fitted for isolation of various parts of the circuit, together with air release valves.
