The Test Bench For Electric Machines is a multipurpose bench for the study and characterization of the electrical machines using an automated test approach. The system is composed of the following main sections:
HMI (Human machine interface): the heart of the laboratory. The HMI communicates with the other devices via serial port using the Modbus protocol, reading electrical and mechanical data from instruments and providing the commands to the prime mover, so it can be used as drive, load or a speed and torque control to put the machine under test in a specific working condition or to simulate different load profiles such as fan, lift, etc. It performs the test automation and provides the user interface to execute the experiments.
Instruments: collect mechanical (speed, torque and temperature) as well as electrical data, and can provide control signals to synchronize a generator with the grid.
Prime mover: A squirrel cage three-phase asynchronous machine controlled by an inverter in four quadrant operation providing the mechanical power and torque necessary for the characterization of the machine under study.
The cooling fluid can be water, or a mixture of glycol and water, dependent on the output temperature required. This fluid is cooled by the integral refrigeration system. The contains a reservoir of cooled fluid, which is pumped through the external process to be coole (e.g. heat exchanger system). A high pressure pump is used to pump the fluid through the process. Two versions of the are available. The standard version has a painted mild steel case while the has a stainless steel casing. A bypass valve facility allows the fluid to be recirculated independently of the process conditions.
Condenser:Single air-cooled condenser manufactured from aluminium fins mechanically bonded to refrigeration grade copper tubes. The condenser fan is of a low noise axial type. Fan blades are fully enclosed by a safety grill.
Compressor:Reciprocating hermetically sealed compressor with a refrigerant cooled motor.
Evaporator:Packaged coil type made of copper tubes and aluminium fins.
This dimensional metrology practice kit is designed for practical training in the metalworking trades. The test pieces used are stainless steel shafts with various protrusions including one square section. Refrigeration systems with two-stage compression are used for the generation of particularly low temperatures. Therefore, two compressors are connected in series, with each compressor only having a relatively low pressure ratio. At very low temperatures large pressure differences are required between the evaporator and condenser. In a compressor the volumetric efficiency drops significantly at high pressure ratios. In addition, intercooling between the low pressure compressor and the high pressure compressor reduces the outlet temperature of the compressor to harmless values and improves the efficiency of the compression. This makes a more favourable dimensioning of the low pressure stage compressor possible. Due to the large specific volume it requires a larger capacity at lower drive power.
