The apparatus consists of a small test cylinder. The temperature of cylinder is measured with the help of temperature sensor inserted in the center. The hot water bath is provided with a heater and is controlled by digital temperature controller. The cylinder is heated by a constant temperature water bath, till steady state is reached. During heating, temperature of the cylinder is function of time and hence, heating of cylinder is under unsteady state heat transfer. An agitator is also provided to maintain the constant bath temperature.

The mechanism able to transform circular movement into reciprocating movement. The unit is assembled in an anodized aluminum profile structure, with steel painted panel. It is made of aluminium and consists of a rotary element (graduated disk), called crank, connected to a rigid bar, called connecting rod. The rotation motion of a crank or crankshaft causes a rectilinear reciprocating motion of a piston or plunger. When rotating the crank, the connecting rod moves back and forward.
It is a reversible system through which the connecting rod can be displaced by turning the crank and the other way round. If the connecting rod generates the input motion (as a piston in a car's engine does), the crank is obliged to rotate.
This mechanism is a combination of an inversion of the slider-crank chain and slider block.

A set of thirteen graduated tubes show the oil pressure across and along the film under the pad. The bench-mounting unit has an aluminium plate (pad) mounted above a continuous loop flat belt. This creates a pressurised film of oil between the pad and the belt. The belt runs in an oil reservoir to provide a continuous supply of oil under the pad.
Students vary the belt speed to find the relationship between sliding speed, oil viscosity and pressure distribution. Included is a variable speed control to control the speed of the motor that turns the belt.
