A steel sphere is pressed against the underside of a driven glass disc. The light from a reflected light microscope passes through the glass disc and the film of oil at the point of contact, It is then reflected from the surface of the steel sphere. The exhaust gases produced by the combustion of the compressed air/gas mixture are made to expand first through the turbine of the turbocharger assembly in order to supply the energy necessary to compress the air and then through the power turbine coupled to the alternator through a toothed belt. The Two Shaft Gas Turbine Study Unit consists of a wheeled frame made of steel, of a panel with mimic diagram carrying the measurement instruments and of a base where the main components are installed, that is the combustion chamber, the turbocharger assembly, the power turbine and the alternator. The electric energy generated by the alternator is dissipated on a resistive load.

The experiments hardware fits onto a Structures Test Frame .It examines the behavior in the elastic region of solid and tubular-section specimens.

A load cell on the other chuck measures torque. The equipment includes a lead to connect the load cell to a Digital Force Display.
