The floating motor is free to rotate and with a moment arm, rests against a load cell. Attached to the motor shaft is a coupling. The engineering drawing for the coupling mating half is supplied for the customer to produce.
Universal Drive Module Apparatus consists of a sturdy cradle, with bearings at either end. The motor is speed controlled using the control box supplied. The signal from the load cell is also fed directly into the control box. The torque being applied to the attached apparatus can be calculated using these parameters. The front panel of the control box has the speed control potentiometer, tachometer display for motor speed and the force display for the load cell signal. Suspended between the bearings is a motor, which gives drive to a variety of customer designed apparatus.

The Industrial Air Conditioning Pilot Plant with Heat Pump and SCADA allows advanced and in-depth study of the operation of an air to water heat exchanger. It also allows students to study the cycle reversing valve and thermostatic expansion valve that are part of the heat pump.

The apparatus, which is illustrated in Fig. 1, consists of a valve base and a bronze barrel which has a precision machined bore into which fits a stainless steel piston. Calibration of Pressure Gauges is used for the calibration of the Bourdon type pressure gauge supplied with the Cussons Hydraulic Bench and other gauges of a similar rating using the dead weight method. Fitted to the valve base are two connections and a blanking plug. A connection for the pressure gauge under test is pre-fitted and supplied with a length of plastic pipe suitable for connection to the pressure gauge via the auxiliary tapping on the Hydraulics Bench. The piston is fitted with a platform which can carry calibration weights the weights supplied with the apparatus are equivalent to pressures of 0.5 bar and 1 bar. The piston and platform have a total weight equivalent to 0.5 bar pressure. A non-return connection for the water supply from the hydraulics bench is fitted on one side of the valve block. A spill-pipe is fitted into the barrel which prevents the piston being ejected by excess pressure. The Bourdon gauge, fitted on the Bench, is a simple device and normally very reliable in service. On the third side of the block is a blanking plug which is removed to allow the apparatus to be drained of water. The apparatus is mounted on a plastic base for stability. After an extended period of use, slight deviations of value are likely to occur and for "accurate" work a calibration curve for the instrument is necessary. The basic element of the gauge is a curved, elastic-metal tube, usually of brass or stainless steel, which changes its geometry when filled with fluid under pressure. This distortion is transmitted by linkage to the gauge pointer. The dead weight tester is not subject to variations and can, therefore, be used as a reliable.

The Mass Oscillations And Hammer Study Unit is provided with a constant level container connected to the water supply by means of a pipe.
In the hydraulic systems the flow variations produce two phenomena: the mass oscillation and the water hammer which are related each other but have different characteristics.
For the water hammer test, the unit is provided with a quick closing valve with manual control in order to obtain an immediate flow interruption.
The oscillation test section is made of stainless steel 3 m long provided with the valves necessary for the flow control and with two pressure measurement devices, the electric signal of which is sent to a double trace memory oscilloscope which allows to examine, in all the phases, the phenomena of mass oscillation.

The centrifugal fan which has a low chord impeller and split volute diffuser casing is directly driven by a DC dynamometer giving a variable speed from 0-4000 rpm, with a swinging stator providing load cell torque measurement and equipped with a toothed wheel for speed measurement. The bench consists of a welded steel frame mounted on castors providing two work surfaces for experiments together with ample storage space for experimental apparatus when not in use. The working surfaces accommodate a control console and a centrifugal fan with variable speed dynamometer drive, to which can be coupled a series of inlet and outlet ducts. The control console houses all electrical components and circuitry associated with the power and speed control, while the instrument panel includes: START/STOP pushbuttons, speed control knob and torque, speed, armature voltage and current displays. The ductwork supplied with the bench is manufactured in aluminium sections assembled by deep spigoted sockets, sealed by O rings. It includes a venturi nozzle, a bell mouthed inlet, flow straighteners, pressure tapping points and disc valves and is designed to allow assembly to various configurations by means of quick release toggle latches. A dual multi-slope manometer scaled 0- 5 and 0-2.5 kPa is supplied for use with the air flow nozzle.

A cantilever has a single gauge bonded onto its surface, and an identical gauge is fixed to an unstressed piece of the same material for temperature compensation. The two gauges form part of a wheatstone bridge which has a balancing potentiometer, and whose meter is calibrated directly in microstrains. The Electrical Resistance Strain Gauge Apparatus has been designed to illustrate the basic features of electrical resistance strain gauges and their application in measuring bending and torsion. A detailed label on the unit shows the wheatstone bridge arrangement and how the specimen strain gauges connect into the circuit. The cantilever is loaded by the load hanger and calibrated weights hung from its free end. A torsion bar is also supplied having two gauges bonded orthogonally at 45º.
