A set of thirteen graduated tubes show the oil pressure across and along the film under the pad. The bench-mounting unit has an aluminium plate (pad) mounted above a continuous loop flat belt. This creates a pressurised film of oil between the pad and the belt. The belt runs in an oil reservoir to provide a continuous supply of oil under the pad.
Students vary the belt speed to find the relationship between sliding speed, oil viscosity and pressure distribution. Included is a variable speed control to control the speed of the motor that turns the belt.
Experiments:
Pressure distributions in a tilting pad bearing.
The relationship between pressure and the film thickness at the trailing edge of the pad.
Influence of sliding speed and viscosity on the pressure distribution in the bearing and comparison with calculations based on Reynolds equation.
This teaching apparatus enables a range of laboratory, classroom and computer-based experiments to introduce civil, mechanical and structural engineering students to plastic theory and limit state design.

....The extended surface comprises a 10mm diameter, long brass rod mounted horizontally and heated at one end with a 20 Watt, 24V DC heater.
Eight thermocouples mounted at 50mm intervals along the rod provide the temperature distribution.
A small-scale accessory designed to demonstrate the temperature profile and heat transfer characteristics for an extended surface when heat flows along the rod by conduction and heat is lost along the rod by combined convection and radiation
A comprehensive instruction manual is supplied.
Temperature of the ambient air is measured by an independent thermocouple.
The accessory is mounted on a PVC baseplate which is designed to stand on the bench top and connect to the Heat Transfer Service Unit without the need for tools.
The Liquid Sedimentation Apparatus is designed to study the settling characteristics and particle sizes of suspended solid. The rear panel is translucent with back lighting. Scales are provided on the tubes. Sedimentation rate is observed using a stopwatch. The tubes can be removed for washing, filling or mixing of solid particles. Five transparent glass sediment tubes are mounted vertically on a rigid frame.
Experiments:
Settling rate curve.
Effect of suspension height on sedimentation rates.
Effect of concentration on sedimentation rate.
Effect of particle size distribution.
Effect of flocculent.
It has a voltage and current regulation and is therefore short circuit proof; it can supply DC 24V power from an additional pair of terminals. The Power Supply unit provides and monitors the power necessary for the system operation with safety extra low voltage: the integrated choke prevents the data telegrams from short circuiting on the bus line.

....The computerized version unit allows, thanks to the electronic transducers and suitable software, to display on personal computer and/or print the tables of results and diagrams of the various experiments. The Computerized Boiling Heat Transfer Apparatus has been designed to perform experiments concerning heat transfer due to convection in a boiling liquid (water). The second leg of the bridge is used to balance the nickel wire and is immersed in a cooling vessel filled with water. The unit is supplied with manuals that describe each component of the system, installation and utilization procedures, and gives many exercises. The unit consists of a vessel containing a quantity of water continuously stirred and heated by a nickel filament. Since this wire is a leg of an alternate current bridge, the temperature can be measured very accurately.

The Piping Loss Apparatus Large is intended to be used with a Hydraulic Bench or an outside water supply. Friction loss is measured by a pressure drop and coefficient of discharge is determined from a pressure drop and a flow rate. Piping Loss Apparatus Large is a comprehensive unit for studying the friction losses in pipes, pipe fittings, and valves and to determine coefficients of discharge for primary flow measuring devices at various flow rates. All friction loss components and the flow measuring devices are arranged on a water proof panel which is attached to a floor standing steel frame. Flow rate is obtained from a water meter and a stop watch. All pressure taps are connected by flexible hoses to a set of specially arranged manifolds such that differential pressure across any component can be measured simply by opening valves without removing the hoses. The pressure drop is measured by differential pressure using manometers. Pressure tapping in by valves with quick connection.

The basic tribological phenomena of journal bearings can be investigated using this unit. A lever with a sliding weight attached to it is connected to the bearing housing. This enables an external moment to be set corresponding to the friction moment generated in the bearing. The journal bearing to be investigated consists of a stainless steel bearing journal and the free-moving gunmetal bearing housing. A three-phase ac motor with a frequency converter for speed control serves as the drive. Another lever, combined with a set of weights, applies the defined load to the bearing. It is possible to view the bearing journal and the lubrication gap through the transparent cover. The continuously adjustable speed, as well as the temperature of the lubricant, is indicated digitally on the control unit. Lubricant is supplied by a drip-feed lubricator that feeds oil to the shaft via two lubrication channels. A drip tray collects the oil that leaks out.
