Boundary layer growth is determined by the measurement of the velocity profile at four stations along the pipe using a traversing Pitot tube.
A bend or mitred cascade elbow may be fitted mid way along the smooth wall pipe for comparison of pressure losses.
Air enters the smooth walled pipe through one of the two flow measurement nozzles provided. Pressure tappings along the length of the pipe permit the pressure gradient to be determined.
The equipment includes a long smooth walled pipe joined to the suction side of an electrically operated centrifugal fan. The fan discharge pipe terminates in a flow control damper for closed conduit work or a plate containing a small aperture for jet dispersion measurements.
A conventional flow measuring orifice plate is supplied for installing in the pipe upstream of the fan for additional demonstrations of pressure loss and recovery.
The equipment is mounted on a floor standing steel frame with an adjacent support for the extended suction pipe. Pressure measurements are made on a multi-tube inclinable manometer mounted on the support frame.
Air jet studies are carried out on the discharge side of the fan. A Pitot tube is traversed vertically and horizontally at different distances from the discharge orifice to investigate the dispersion properties.

The Archimedes principle states: The magnitude of the force equals the weight of the fluid that the object displaces. An alternative method of measuring the buoyancy force is to measure the amount of fluid displaced when the object is floating in the fluid tank. The level before and after immersion is monitored using the integral scale on the outside of the fluid tank. Test object shapes are solid cylinder, cube, sphere and cone are supplied as standard, there are also three identical shapes that are made from different materials, these are aluminium, brass and steel. The change in position of the counter weight gives rise to a reduced moment thus indicating the magnitude of the buoyancy force being applied to the object. Each test object is water proofed to avoid inaccuracies of results and corrosion over time. When the test objects are suspended the moment lever arm is brought to the horizontal by moving the balance hanger and monitoring the small spirit level until level. When the test object is lowered into the fluid the counterweight is adjusted to bring the moment lever arm back to the horizontal. The fluid tank can be filled with water or another medium, i.e. anti-freeze, oil etc. The samples attach to the moment lever arm using a cord and lowered into the fluid tank by lowering the cord accordingly, a scale on the lever arm allows the user to also record the amount of distance the shape has been lowered.

The cooling water circuit is fitted with a flowmeter on the inlet and a flow control valve on the outlet side. Note that the unit must be arranged for contra flow - that is the exhaust gas and cooling water must flow through the heat exchanger in opposite directions. Exhaust Calorimeter comprises a multi-tube exhaust gas heat exchanger in which the exhaust gases pass through the tubes and the cooling water flows outside the tubes. This contains the brine liquid to be studied and is covered by a sheet of flat plate glass, set at an angle of 12º to the horizontal, so that water condensing on it readily runs down to the lower edge. Water evaporating from the tray condenses on the inside surface of the glass cover, runs down to the lower edge and collects in a channel alongside the evaporating basin, from whence it drains to a volumetric measuring vessel. Solar Still Basin Type: This includes a shallow square evaporating tray, the base of which is fitted with removable heat insulating material which assists in the evaporation process. Temperature measurement by multi-point thermocouple instrument is provided at the following points: - feed, brine (output), ambient, glass (outside), glass (inside), the vapour space, centre of tray (under mat), mat (top side). The whole top section of the still may be turned horizontally through 180, so making it possible to alter the angle of incidence of sunlight on the absorbing pad. An optional pen recorder is available to continuously record these temperatures.

Critical condition of Struts Apparatus apparatus shows how the buckling mechanism occurs, and the influence of the end restraint. A piece of material in compression is called a strut. If it is short and stubby it will fail by compressive stress, but if it is slender the failure mode is that of buckling. The load at which the strut buckles depends on the way in which the ends are restrained. Built-in ends resist buckling more than ends which are free to move.
