Pasteurising temperatures and holding times are easily adjusted, allowing the effectiveness of the product treatment to be investigated. When correctly operated, cleaned and sterilised can produce a correctly treated and pasteurised product. However it is not intended that this apparatus be used to manufacture products for human consumption. Although primarily designed for use with milk, other food liquids can be pasteurised providing that their solids content is not too high.
The Laboratory Pasteuriser accurately reproduces in miniature the industrial High Temperature Short Time process. Nominal throughput is only 10 litres/ hour.

Transfers heat from the treated product to the feed liquid. Full instrumentation and controls are provided to regulate heating water temperature and also feed pump speed which in turn regulates holding time. This provides dual benefits in reducing the energy required to reach the pasteurising temperature and in reducing the cooling required. An optional Chilled Water Circulator is available.

The cooling fluid can be water, or a mixture of glycol and water, dependent on the output temperature required. This fluid is cooled by the integral refrigeration system. The contains a reservoir of cooled fluid, which is pumped through the external process to be coole (e.g. heat exchanger system). A high pressure pump is used to pump the fluid through the process. Two versions of the are available. The standard version has a painted mild steel case while the has a stainless steel casing. A bypass valve facility allows the fluid to be recirculated independently of the process conditions.
Condenser:Single air-cooled condenser manufactured from aluminium fins mechanically bonded to refrigeration grade copper tubes. The condenser fan is of a low noise axial type. Fan blades are fully enclosed by a safety grill.

The steam bench incorporates four similar mild steel tubes, each connected to a common steam supply via an inlet regulating valve and a common blowdown line via an outlet valve. Two of the tubes are unlagged but have differing finishes, namely a painted finish and a chromium plated finish respectively. Lagging Efficiency Steam Bench consists of a sturdy framework and panels of all steel construction, fitted with a student work surface, interconnecting back panel and adjustable feet. The measured temperatures are displayed on an analogue temperature meter via a selection switch. From measurements of temperature and condensate levels over a period of time, students are able to calculate the lagging efficiency and the coefficient of thermal conductivity of the lagging. The remaining two tubes are lagged, one with glass fibre webbing tape and the other with a pre-formed fibre glass insulation jacket. Each tube is fitted with a sight glass and scale to enable condensate to be measured.

Laminar And Viscous Flow Heat Transfer Unit is allowed to take place between oil and water in a concentric tube. The oil is raised to a maximum temperature of 90°C in a tank fitted with an electric heating element. Control is by a panel mounted digital PID controller and the maximum temperature is limited by a separate thermostat for operator safety. Oil flowing in the inner tube is supplied by an international oil company and has a kinematic viscosity at 70°C, of 8x10-6 m2 s-1. As it flows downwards, the oil is cooled as heat is transferred to the flow of cooling water which surrounds the core tube. The heated oil is pumped from the tank into the core tube of the diagonally mounted concentric tube heat exchanger.

Laminar Flow Apparatus is to be used with Hydraulics Bench. Two horizontal plates are placed closely together with seals on side edges. The top plate is transparent and has a transparent grid to help observe stream line patterns. Laminar Flow Apparatus equipment is designed to study laminar flow in two dimensions. Stream lines are produced by regulating a flow of dye from a reservoir through a series of holes at the upstream end. The set rests on adjustable screw supports with bulls eye level. This plate is removable to insert or remove models. The bottom plate has small holes which are connected by valves to a water supply or source and a drain or sink. Water is admitted through a diffuser at one end and drained at the other end.
