Orientation Processing Station

The Orientation-Processing station teaches interfacing, problem solving, programming, sequencing and operation for index tables, stepper motors, homing sensors, fiber optic sensors, part transfer, parts orientation, and capacitor sensors. The Orientation Processing Station is a small mechatronics system in itself with multiple, integrated technologies that can be used stand-alone or in combination with other stations. The Orientation Processing Station is a mobile workstation with slotted work surface that contains an operator station, 8-station rotary index table, pick and place pneumatic robot, fiber optic gauging module, part transfer module, finished parts storage module, parts set, a pneumatic distribution module as well as an electrical distribution module, an electro-pneumatic valve manifold, and a digital I/O interface module. This station performs the role of parts orientation and an optional simulated machine operation in the process of assembling a working industrial directional control valve. Orifice and Free Jet Flow

The orifice is set at the base of the tank through a special wall fitting that provides a flush inside surface. In the Orifice and Free Jet Flow accessory a constant head tank is fed with water from the Hydraulics Bench. A jet trajectory tracing device allows the path followed by the jet to be ascertained. The head is maintained at a constant value by an adjustable overflow and is indicated by a level scale.

Orifice Discharge

The Orifice Discharge accessory consists of a cylindrical glass tank which has an orifice fitted in the base. A traverse assembly is provided which enables a pitot tube to be positioned anywhere in the jet. These are supplied in an attractive storage case. A label inside the lid gives dimensional details of each orifice. The pitot head and the total head across the orifice are shown on manometer tubes adjacent to the tank. In addition to the standard orifice, supply includes four additional orifices. Attached to this pitot tube is a sharp blade which can be traversed across the jet to accurately measure the jet diameter and the vena contracta diameter and so determine the contraction coefficient.

Orifice Experiments

An orifice can be screwed into either of the threaded holes and the unused aperture sealed with the blanking plug provided. A scale is mounted on the side of the tank to enable the height of the water above either orifice position to be determined. This arrangement avoids excessive turbulence and enables a steady level surface to be maintained. Two threaded holes are cut into the tank in which to mount the orifice being studied, one in the tank base for 'vertical' discharge, and the other in the tank side for 'horizontal' discharge. The zero of the scale coincides with the centre of the side outlet position. The Orifice sets are used in conjunction with the Inlet Head Tank for the investigation of the flow of water through a horizontal or a vertical orifice. Water is supplied to the tank via a hose connection to the base inlet, and is then distributed within the tank by a vertical perforated sparge pipe. When an orifice is fitted in the horizontal discharge position a Trajectory Profile Hook Gauge can be used to determine the jet profile. Details of both sets of orifices are given as follows.

Osborne Reynolds Demonstration

The Osborne Reynolds' Demonstration operates in a vertical mode. Flow through this pipe is regulated using a control valve at the discharge end. A header tank containing stilling media provides a constant head of water through a bellmouth entry to the flow visualisation pipe. Velocity of the water can therefore be determined to allow calculation of Reynolds' number. The flow rate of water through the pipe can be measured utilizing the volumetric tank (or measuring cylinder) of the Hydraulics Bench. 
The equipment uses a similar dye injection technique to that of Reynolds' original apparatus to enable observation of flow conditions.

Osborne Reynolds Unit

The unit is designed to be used on Hydraulics Bench which allows the volumetric measuring tank to be used for flow measurement. Alternatively the unit can be used on a laboratory bench with water supplied from a tap and with the unit discharging to a drain. Osborne Reynolds Unit comprises a reentrant bell mouthed glass experimental tube of 16 mm bore and approximately 650 mm long mounted horizontally in a 103 mm bore perspex tube. Flow control is achieved by an angled seat valve at exit from the apparatus. A dye injector probe and adjustable head dye reservoir are provided to introduce a dye filament for the observation of laminar, and turbulent flow regimes, and the transition between them. An adjustable height constant head inlet tank supplies water to the annulus so that the water flows along the annulus through a baffle into a reverse flow stilling chamber, thus providing a uniform flow with very little turbulence into the bell mouth entry of the experimental tube.

Experimental Capability:
Determination of the lower and upper Critical Velocities and Reynolds Number.
Demonstration of laminar or streamline flow, turbulent flow and the transition between these two regimes by observation of injected dye line.

Oscillating Cylinder Apparatus

Oscillating Cylinder Apparatus at the other end of the crankshaft is a slider that runs in a swivelling housing. A linear scale mounted to this housing ensures accurate readings of the piston displacement. On the left of the base is a large rotating protractor scale 'Crank' that rotates on a shaft and bearing arrangement. The increments on the protractor match with a indicator that ensure accurate reading of the angular movement of the scale.
