The heat exchanger has been divided into three equal sections in order to allow examination of the intermediate stream temperature conditions and temperature distribution through the heat exchanger. Water to Water Turbulent Flow Heat Exchanger is a highly advanced concentric tube heat exchanger with hot water flowing through the central tube while cooling water flows through the annular space. The addition of the central tube surface temperatures at inlet and exit allow detailed investigation of the surface heat transfer coefficient inside and outside the central tube. Thermocouples sense the hot and cold stream temperatures at the four stations and the inner tube wall temperatures on entry and exit.

A panel with tubular supports is provided for storing filter columns not in use. Dosed or untreated water is transferred from the sample tank to the filter system by a centrifugal feedwater pump at reduced pressure and a metered rate; treated filtered water is either collected in a portable 25 litre storage tank or passed to the Steam Boiler Bench, depending on the use of the unit. Water Treatment Studies Bench consists of a sturdy framework and panels of all steel construction, fitted with a student work surface, interconnecting back panel and adjustable feet. These are fitted with top and bottom quick release couplings. Two of the columns may be used at any one time in a system of inter-connecting pipework and selection valves, set to allow the columns to be circulated with dosed or untreated water either independently, in parallel, in series or in reverse, and with a backwash connection from the service water line. The studies bench comprises five interchangeable, clear filter columns, each of which can be filled with a sand filter or ion exchange medias. A variable chemical dosage system, comprising a dosage pump and a chemical additive mixing vessel, is supplied to inject diluted additive at a controlled rate to either a portable 25 litre sample tank or the boiler feedwater tank on the Steam Boiler Bench. A control box, suitable for either 110V or 240V a.c. supplies, provides separate ON-OFF switches and associated indicator lamps for each pump and a switch to select the pumps for either Water Treatment Studies or Feed Water Service to the Steam Boiler Bench. Pressures at the inlet and outlet of either filter column are indicated on separate 0-2.5 bar Bourdon tube pressure gauges. Sample cocks are included in the system to enable water samples to be collected for analysis by test kits supplied with the unit.

The components are clearly but compactly arranged in a manner similar to that used for many domestic air-water heat pumps and all are visible from the front of the unit.
The Water Water Heat Pump consists of a hermetic compressor, an efficient plate heat exchanger condenser and evaporator, a liquid receiver, a thermostatically controlled expansion valve.
The operating cycle is as follows:
Slightly superheated Refrigerant vapour enters the compressor from the evaporator and Water Water Heat Pump pressure is increased. Heat is given up to the cooling water and the refrigerant condenses to a liquid before passing to the liquid receiver and then the expansion valve. This brings about a rise in temperature and the hot vapour enters the water cooled plate condenser.

This additional sealing equipment can be taken out easily and can be replaced by the sealing arrangement for use in ship models in the towing tank in order to reduce friction So if the additional equipment for use of the dynamometers in a cavitation tunnel is ordered, the dynamometers are also suitable for use in ship models in a towing tank. In the first case, they are provided only with a sealing arrangement suitable for sealing against water pressure whereas in the latter case, they are supplied with additional equipment that seals the propeller dynamometers against relatively high vacuum and against pressure up to 1 bar above atmospheric pressure.

The Watertight Propeller Dynamometer of high capacity is sealed against pressure of up to 1 bar above atmospheric pressure and against relatively high vacuum (1 bar = 10 to the power 5 N/m2 = 0.1 MPa). Idle friction of the measuring shaft is small despite the use of sealing rings and is approximately 0.3 Nm for dynamometer and 0.4 Nm for dynamometer. The dynamometer can be used also for propulsion tests with relatively high torque and thrust values in ship models under water. That has slightly larger dimensions, but is of similar appearance. It is thus suitable for use in the measuring section of cavitation tunnels, as an inner drive dynamometer in ship models or in dummy bodies mounted in the measuring section of a cavitation tunnel.

Waves reflect off the surfaces of the model and from sides of the tank. This can be a major limitation on towing tanks where the productively of the whole facility is determined by the settling time after a run has been completed. All tanks have resonant frequencies and often these lie within the working frequencies that are generated in the tank. A good beach will absorb much of the energy after is has passed the model but has little effect on cross-waves or models reflected from the model. Wave makers incorporate proven software techniques for wave generator control and can include software links to towing carriages to optimise test duration. Wave Technology is a rapidly advancing science new or modified products are continually being developed to meet unique experimental needs, including those associated with the offshore industrys deep-sea exploration research programmes. Active absorbing wavemakers dramatically increase the performance of a tank by prolonging the time that an experiment can run without the build up of spurious waves and also by decreasing the settling time between runs.
