An inverted aluminium T-beam is mounted between two simple supports on knife edges. The load onto the T-beam is applied using a fine screw jack mechanism with integral load cell. A standalone experiment for determining the bending stresses and strains across the surface of a T-beam. The load cell arrangement and supports create a three (3) point loading.
These strain gauges are paired with temperature compensation dummy gauges for output stability. A number of precision strain gauges are arranged on the T-beam specimen. Each strain gauge pair is numbered for accurate connection to the Interface.

Bernoulli Apparatus

The apparatus is designed to be used on the working surface of the basic Air Flow Bench and connected by convoluted hose to the 70 mm dia. blown experiment duct on the fan outlet. However, it may be used as a standalone unit by connecting it to any suitable fan with an air supply of approximately 500 litre/sec. at 600 Pascals and by utilising appropriate manometers. A pitot static tube is fitted at the outlet end of the venturi duct and this can be traversed longitudinally along the centre line to enable its measuring tip to be positioned at various points. The apparatus comprises an acrylic duct with the upper and lower surfaces in opaque material and the sides clear. The whole unit forms a 60 x 50 mm rectangular cross section converging to a 20 x 50 mm throat area then diverging back to 60 x 50 mm section at the exit plane. Measured positions are obtained against two scales positioned on opposite sides of the duct to avoid parallax errors. A plot of typical results which can be obtained is shown in the graph. The scales are marked in millimetres but are reversible to show imperial measurements.

Introduction:
In carrying out the experiment the student is able to verify Bernoullis Theorem which, in its wider form, states that: At any point in a tube through which a fluid is flowing, the sum of pressure energy, potential energy and kinetic energy is constant.
Bernoullis Apparatus is designed to demonstrate visually the interchange between static and dynamic pressure as air flows through a duct of variable cross sectional area.

Bernoullis Experiment

An eleven tube static pressure manometer bank is attached to the convergent divergent duct. A dye injection system is provided which allows for a single filament of dye to be introduced into the entrance to the convergent section to enable laminar and turbulent flow regimes to be demonstrated. Bernoulli's Apparatus consists essentially of a two dimensional rectangular section convergent divergent duct designed to fit between Constant Head Inlet Tank and Variable Head Outlet Tank. The convergent divergent duct is symmetrical about the centre line with a flat horizontal upper surface into which the eleven static pressure tappings are drilled. The differential head across the test section can be varied from zero up to a maximum of 450 mm. The test section is manufactured from acrylic sheet. The height of the channel at entry and exit is 19.525 mm and the height at the throat is 6.35 mm. The static tappings are at a pitch of 25 mm distributed about the centre and therefore about the throat. The lower surface is at an angle of 4 29'. The width of the channel is 6.35 mm.

The test section consists of a classical Venturi machined in clear acrylic. A series of wall tappings enable measurement of the static pressure distribution along the converging duct, while a total head tube is provided to traverse along the centre line of the test section.
The Venturi can be demonstrated as a means of flow measurement and the discharge coefficient can be determined.
The test section is arranged so that the characteristics of flow through both a converging and diverging section can be studied. Water is fed through a hose connector and is controlled by a flow regulator valve at the outlet of the test section.
