The rolling thin film oven (RTFO) test is used to measure the effect of heat and air on a moving film of semisolid asphalt binder. The results of this treatment are determined from measurements of the binder properties before and after the test. The superpave PG binder specification looked for tests which would closely simulate field performance. Hotmix asphalt binder experiences significant aging during the manufacturing and laying process. Repeat ability of the test is directly related to the accuracy with which the oven temperature can be maintained and the re producibility of the thermal rise time of the system. Investigating this phenomenon within a laboratory environment, with a repeatable and simple test is very useful within the design process.

This benchtop unit is based on the vertical combination of a threaded spindle and a nut. A spring balance with a nylon cord enables a turning moment to be exercised on the spindle using a pulley. Additional weights can be placed on the rotating plate to change the axial load on the thread. It contains two spindles with trapezoid threads and varying lead. The Three Dimensional Equilibrium equipment is used for studying the equilibrium of five concurrent and non-concurrent forces in a three dimensional system. A vertical load with a cord is applied at one of the joints. Each cord is marked out a 100 mm length. The primary separation operation for crude oil occurs when the crude stream flows through a vessel of sufficient capacity to allow gravitational separation of the gas, liquid hydrocarbon and water phases. This fluid mixture then flows into a horizontal separator vessel fabricated of clear PVC. Gas flow passes through a secondary vertical 2-phase separator.
