An integral weir tank is provided along with a volumetric measuring tank which is stepped to afford accurate measurement of both high and low flow rates. The Hydraulics Bench Unit range provides the basic services for pumping and volumetric measurement of the water supply with which all the additional accessories and experiments are used. The measuring tank discharges into a fiberglass sump tank by means of a quick acting ball valve. The unit is designed to sit within the work area of Hydraulics bench and Hydrostatics bench. The unit is provided with four adjustable feet to set it level. The Hele Shaw unit comprises of a robust aluminium base plate, onto which is mounted a glass facia plate. Water is let in through the inlet tap, and wells evenly into the gap. As the water passes towards the outlet it passes over a row of small dye inlet holes, from which dye streams can be produced. The rate of flow of dye is controlled by the height of the dye header tank. The plate is clamped onto its seal by a number of wing nuts. The gap between the glass and base is constant. The rubber inserts are trapped between the glass and base. The well and sink arrangements are controlled by four small taps on each side of the apparatus, to provide a sink, source or doublet in any combination.

Mercury is used only for high speed flows like that in Supersonic wind tunnels. The inclination also increases the reading value thus increasing the accuracy of the measurement. Water or Methyl Alcohol and Mercury can be used as the fluid in these kinds of manometers.
The test section can be fitted with two interchangeable variable incidence model carriers, one with a cylindrical section and the other with a low velocity sub-sonic aerofoil. The cylinder has a single static tapping which can be used to plot the pressure profile around the cylinder. Two Dimensional Wind Tunnel is designed for use with either Air Flow Bench or Fan Test Stand. The wind tunnel has a high aspect ratio clear acrylic test section 250 mm high and 65 mm deep. Pressures can be measured using Multitube Manometer or the Multiple Pressure transducer Module which provides 0-10 Volt analogue outputs for connection to a computer or data logging system. The aerofoil has 14 static pressure tappings allowing the pressure profile around the nose and along both the upper and lower cambered surfaces to be measured.

The boiler, with its attendant mains water make up tank, feed pump, steam main, blowdown, drain and feedwater connections is housed in a self-contained unit. Steam Boiler Bench consists of a sturdy framework and panels of all steel construction, fitted with a student work surface, interconnecting back panel and adjustable feet. Adjacent and connected to the framework is an electric steam boiler of 36 kW rated output. The student desk unit contains a control box with an electric power supply isolator and instrumentation to read steam and water temperatures and also to display the electrical energy consumed in kWh. All piping and wiring required to connect the boiler to the steam benches is supplied. The heat input to the boiler is provided by specially designed electrical resistance immersion elements run at a low power density in order to give a long operational life.

The whole set is manufactured to a very high standard and is supplied with all necessary accessories including thermometers with reading lenses, measuring vessels and a general purpose set of four burners for town and coke oven gas, natural and methane gas, butane, propane, acetylene, ethylene and propylene. The two main items of equipment in the apparatus are the Boys non-recording gas calorimeter fitted with appropriate burners in the base, and a precision, Hyde type gas meter with a capacity of 2.0 litres/rev consisting of a specially designed measuring drum housed in a gas-tight casing and sealed with water.

The engine is directly coupled to the dynamometer using an inertia matched drive shaft. All rotating parts are protected by fixed guards. The test bed incorporates a robust mounting frame to which both the engine and dynamometer are fitted. The drive shaft guard is interlocked with the Emergency Stop circuit to prevent the engine from use when the guard is removed or open. The frame is fitted with wheels to allow the test bed to be easily moved.

The cooling water circuit is fitted with a flowmeter on the inlet and a flow control valve on the outlet side. Note that the unit must be arranged for contra flow - that is the exhaust gas and cooling water must flow through the heat exchanger in opposite directions. Exhaust Calorimeter comprises a multi-tube exhaust gas heat exchanger in which the exhaust gases pass through the tubes and the cooling water flows outside the tubes. An exhaust gas sampling point with shut off cock is provided. The instrumentation is sufficient to enable the heat content of the exhaust gases to be accurately determined. Temperature measuring points are provided for exhaust gas inlet and outlet, and cooling water inlet and outlet.

This contains the brine liquid to be studied and is covered by a sheet of flat plate glass, set at an angle of 12º to the horizontal, so that water condensing on it readily runs down to the lower edge. Water evaporating from the tray condenses on the inside surface of the glass cover, runs down to the lower edge and collects in a channel alongside the evaporating basin, from whence it drains to a volumetric measuring vessel. Solar Still Basin Type: This includes a shallow square evaporating tray, the base of which is fitted with removable heat insulating material which assists in the evaporation process. Temperature measurement by multi-point thermocouple instrument is provided at the following points: - feed, brine (output), ambient, glass (outside), glass (inside), the vapour space, centre of tray (under mat), mat (top side). The whole top section of the still may be turned horizontally through 180, so making it possible to alter the angle of incidence of sunlight on the absorbing pad. An optional pen recorder is available to continuously record these temperatures.
