The system uses a manual automotive gear. The input shaft is driven a motor dynamometer via a belt and pulleys. Speed is controlled by an inverter. The output shaft is attached to an eddy current absorber dynamometer. The Automotive Gear Study Unit is for studying the acceleration of an automotive gear system as well as gear system efficiency under different gear ratios and speeds. The system requires outside water supply for water brake absorber cooling. The unit is on steel frame with adjustable footings. The gear output shaft is extended for a study of inertia of a mass and equivalent enertia of the gear system.

....Gearbox Apparatus can be slid across each other by the use of a lever with ball knob and the whole gearbox can be rotated using the rotating handle attached on the side of the input pulley. The gears are industry standard gears finished in high quality and mesh together in different ratios within the frame. A study wall mounted frame houses all the gears, shafts, bearings and levers contained within this apparatus. All gears run on shafts fitted into bearings and the changing mechanism ensures smooth transition. A 'H' style change with gear change lever and knob allows the use of the different gears within the system.
Protractors on the input and output shaft pulleys are fitted. A set of masses and hangers is supplied to allow the shafts to be driven. The input and output pulleys allow loads to be applied for lifting and lowering. This unit is hand operated. A set of clear, transparent guards are fitted so that safety is maintained and clear visibility is ensured.

The apparatus is supported on a PVC base into which a vertical water supply pipe is fitted. Surrounding the supply pipe is a transparent plastic shield fitted with a top PVC flanged cover assembly. Impact of Jets apparatus enables experiments to be carried out on the reaction of a jet of water on vanes of various forms. In operation, water from the Hydraulics Bench is fed into the unit and a vertical jet is produced through the supply pipe and its interchangeable nozzle. The water from the jet is deflected by the reaction vane under test, and drains away through the large aperture in the base of the chamber. The reaction vane is held within the transparent shield approximately 20 mm above the vertical water supply pipe nozzle by a rod which passes through the top cover and supports a flat tray, onto which masses may be placed. Three different types of reaction vane are supplied with the apparatus and the types are flat, hemispherical cup and 45° cone form. The force produced by the jet impinging on the target is transmitted by the rod, to the flat tray where weights are placed in order to balance this transmitted force. Two interchangeable nozzles for the supply pipe are supplied, one of 8 mm and one of 5 mm diameter. Each vane can be secured to the pivot arm by a set screw and when not in use is stored on pegs on the unit base plate.

Unsymmetrical Cantilever Apparatus Angular adjustment can be made easily and the angular position can be read off using the integral angular scale and pointer. The free end of the cantilever has point loads applied using the load hanger and calibrated weights. Unsymmetrical Cantilever Apparatus allows the vertical and horizontal deflections of the free end of a test specimen to be measured when loading occurs along a principle axis or at a known angle. Unsymmetrical Cantilever Apparatus holds the indicators relative to the rigid end of the cantilever to ensure accurate deflection measurement.
