Laminar And Viscous Flow Heat Transfer Unit

Laminar And Viscous Flow Heat Transfer Unit is allowed to take place between oil and water in a concentric tube. The oil is raised to a maximum temperature of 90°C in a tank fitted with an electric heating element. Control is by a panel mounted digital PID controller and the maximum temperature is limited by a separate thermostat for operator safety. Oil flowing in the inner tube is supplied by an international oil company and has a kinematic viscosity at 70°C, of 8x10-6 m2 s-1. As it flows downwards, the oil is cooled as heat is transferred to the flow of cooling water which surrounds the core tube. The heated oil is pumped from the tank into the core tube of the diagonally mounted concentric tube heat exchanger.

Determination of surface heat transfer coefficients on both the oil and water sides and of the overall heat transfer coefficient.

The equipment is self-contained and may be bench-mounted in either the classroom or laboratory by virtue of its portability.
A model undershot weir and bridge pier are included for local erosion demonstrations.
A transparent, inclinable flow channel through which water can be re-circulated by a pump over a mobile bed to demonstrate the whole range of bedforms from incipient particle movement to bed wash-out.
The working section of the channel is 1.55m long, 78mm wide and 110mm deep.
A water level gauge is supplied to calibrate the overshot weir.
Three different discharge rates can be selected (and measured) within the range 0.2 to 0.6 litres/sec.
The channel slope can be adjusted within the range 0-10%. 

Description:
The unit consists of an inclinable channel mounted on a frame, together with a discharge tank and recirculating pump. The channel slope is adjusted by means of a fine screw jack to which an accurate slope indicator is attached. To commence a demonstration, sand is placed evenly along the channel bed, between the inlet tank and the overfall discharge weir. The channel sides are transparent in order that bed profile changes can be observed, and a section of one side is provided with graphical grid markings to permit quantitative assessments to be made of bedform dynamics. Water is circulated around the system at one of the three selectable flow rates.

This experimental unit forms part of a series of teaching systems developed in collaboration with the Department of Automation and Information Technology at the Harz University of Applied Studies and Research. A rotary encoder determines the position of the vehicle from the rotation of its wheels. This in turn activates an actuator, the drive motor on the vehicle. A vehicle with an inverted rod pendulum acts as a mechanical multi-variable system. A fuzzy control moves the rod pendulum to the centre position, where it is held in position, and at the same time controls the position of the vehicle. A joystick can be used to control the system manually. This allows the degree of difficulty of the control process to be estimated very accurately. The control process is made more difficult by the fact that the vehicle can only move to a limited extent from its original position.

The air then moves into a u-shaped pipe.An orifice plate in the pipe connects to a manometer on the instrumentation panel to measure the airflow rate. The test pipe discharges to atmosphere. Pressure tappings each end of the test pipe connect to amanometer on the instrument panel to measure test length pressure drop. Students control the power input to the test pipe heater using a variable transformer while noting the power using instrumentation on the panel. Further thermocouples measure temperature at various points within the test pipe insulation. Students use a digital indicator on the instrumentation panel to display thermocouple temperature readings. A thermometer measures the air temperature at the inlet to the test pipe.Thermocouples measure the temperature at various points along the test pipe wall.

Model Sedimentation Tank Experiment

Water is taken from the laboratory mains supply and is fed to the settling tank via a flow meter. For studies of sedimentation, a slurry is prepared in a sump tank and pumped via a specially designed flow meter to join the fresh water stream just before entry to the settling tank.
This may be comparatively analyzed by the Imhoff cone technique or more accurately by drying and weighing.The sump tank is continually agitated by a flow sparge device to prevent settling of solids during an experiment. A well-mixed slurry of known concentration and flow enters the tank uniformly under an inlet weir.
