This experimental unit forms part of a series of teaching systems developed in collaboration with the Department of Automation and Information Technology at the Harz University of Applied Studies and Research. A fuzzy control is used to move the ball to a specific position quickly and with as little movement of the plate as possible, even when the position of the ball is modified by external influences. A ball-plate model acts as a weakly-coupled mechanical multivariable system. The inclination of the plate is modified by the movements of the respective motors; these movements are transferred to the plate by the drive rod. A joystick can be used to control the system manually. This allows the degree of difficulty of the control process to be estimated very accurately. The position of the ball is measured without feedback using a touch panel and the crisp signals sent to the fuzzy controller, where the signals are transformed into fuzzy input values and inferenced before being transformed back into a crisp output value. Two servo motors act as actuators during this process.

The air flow rate is measured using pressure sensors at discharge orifices at the top of the columns. The two air columns are fed by variable pressure regulators, which can be used to adjust the air flow rate through the column. The integral micro controller calculates the flow rates from the pressure readings and displays these on the front panel.
The apparatus comprises three clear acrylic columns mounted above a moulded ABS base. This column features an overflow pipe, which returns the water back into the sump. The base contains a water reservoir with a variable speed submersible pump, which pumps water through an electronic flow meter into the base of the left hand column.
Pressure drops on all three columns are measured by differential pressure sensors connected to tapping points at the top and bottom of the columns. The software also provides powerful graph plotting facilities. All process measurements are displayed simultaneously on the front panel display and are available on the USB output for data logging.

A known water pressure is applied on the specimens surface for a known time, as requested by Standard using a suitable air compressor having at least 5 bar pressure. Concrete Water Impermeability Apparatus Six Place apparatus is used to determine the depth of penetration of the water into the concrete (impermeability) under known time and pressure. The unit accepts concrete cubic, cylindrical or prismatic specimens having max. dimensions of 200x200x200 mm. A manometer checks constantly the applied water pressure. The water penetrated is measured by breaking the specimen, or by reading the water permeated through the graduated burette. Self-priming pumps are able to suck in and transport air and water.
