A stirrer motor is incorporated to agitate the liquid under test and is controlled by a pushbutton on the top panel of the control unit. Immediately behind the pushbutton are two motor drive outputs which connect to the test cup via the curved flexible drive - changeover being made simply by lifting the cable drive from one outlet and placing it in the other. The unit is also fitted with an integral, rechargeable LPG gas tank. Electrically heated flash point apparatus is designed to determine the flash point of petroleum products with flash points above 49ºC (120ºF) and in so doing conforms to the following standards: Method The apparatus consists essentially of a cast-iron stove with test cup, lid and shutter assembly mounted on a stainless steel encased control unit with the main power switch and heater controller located on the front panel. Energy of solar origin stored in the battery can be converted into kinetic energy by the use of the electric motor and measured by the dynamometer and tachometer system. The characteristics of the photovoltaic cell array can be determined by the instrumentation provided. As shown in the illustration, the power element in the unit is a photovoltaic cell array comprising thirty-six silicon cells connected to a control unit incorporating a storage battery, and a switched loading system consisting of an electric motor and dynamometer and a bank of resistors. The photovoltaic cell material employed is highly efficient giving an energy conversion of around 10%, i.e. an output of the order of 100 watts per square meter in full sunshine. Provision is made for the use of recorders to indicate both the output of the solar cell array and the output of the storage battery. The primary separation operation for crude oil occurs when the crude stream flows through a vessel of sufficient capacity to allow gravity separation of the gas, liquid hydrocarbon and water phases.
