The instrumentation includes temperature sensors, two differential water pressure sensors, a mechanical level sensor (float switch) and an electronic level sensor (conductivity). It includes a variable volume process tank, a hot water tank with electric heater and indirect heating/cooling coil, a hot water pump, two non-dedicated pumps, three on/off solenoid valves and a proportioning valve. This allows the configuration to be quickly changed, offering a wide variety of different loops. The inlets and outlets of the various pumps, valves and tanks incorporate self-sealing quick release fittings.
The contains everything that is needed to perform a range of single-loop process control experiments in conjunction with a PC.
A pressure regulating valve with filter is also included to isolate the equipment from fluctuations in the water supply pressure. The flexible nature of the system also allows for a wide variety of different disturbances to be applied to the loops to allow the effectiveness of the control parameters to be compared. As all these disturbances are under software control, they can be repeated precisely during the optimisation process, thus allowing an excellent degree of fine-tuning to be implemented.

The unit permits to demonstrate the difference in the braking torque between leading and trailing shoe braking systems and the effect on the braking torque of the different combinations of leading and trailing shoes. All three nozzles have axial static pressure tappings allowing the approach, throat and divergent section pressures to be measured. The variation of pressure ratio and mass flow may be investigated for all three nozzles.
Two convergent-divergent nozzles of with the same throat diameter but different discharge area and a single convergent nozzle having the same diameter are supplied and fit in the common test section.
The Archimedes principle states: The magnitude of the force equals the weight of the fluid that the object displaces. An alternative method of measuring the buoyancy force is to measure the amount of fluid displaced when the object is floating in the fluid tank. The level before and after immersion is monitored using the integral scale on the outside of the fluid tank. Test object shapes are solid cylinder, cube, sphere and cone are supplied as standard, there are also three identical shapes that are made from different materials, these are aluminium, brass and steel. The change in position of the counter weight gives rise to a reduced moment thus indicating the magnitude of the buoyancy force being applied to the object. Each test object is water proofed to avoid inaccuracies of results and corrosion over time. When the test objects are suspended the moment lever arm is brought to the horizontal by moving the balance hanger and monitoring the small spirit level until level. When the test object is lowered into the fluid the counterweight is adjusted to bring the moment lever arm back to the horizontal. The fluid tank can be filled with water or another medium, i.e. anti-freeze, oil etc. The samples attach to the moment lever arm using a cord and lowered into the fluid tank by lowering the cord accordingly, a scale on the lever arm allows the user to also record the amount of distance the shape has been lowered.

The arm transmits the forceon the test model directly to a strain gauged load cell. In addition, the equipment is fully compatiblewith Versatile Data Acquisition System and can quickly and conveniently connectto the frame mounting interface unit. The balance mechanism enablestest models with a rigid support arm to be mounted and held securely inposition in the working section of the wind tunnel. When mounted in the base of the wind tunnel working section, the balancemeasures the drag force only. This is useful for a variety of investigationssuch as wind loadings on tall buildings. To measure the lift and drag forces onmodels the balance mounts on the side of the working section of the windtunnel. The drag force is measured first, and then students rotate the balancemechanism through 90 degrees and repeat the test to measure the lift force. It can also be used to measure dragforces on model vehicles enabling students to determine and comparecoefficients of drag.
