Sediment Flow Channel

The channel is of a rectangular cross-section supported by steel frame. The channel sides are made of clear acrylic with tilting controlled by a manual screw jack. Sediment Flow Channel is a self contained bench top open channel for studying bed forms with change in flow and slope as well as flow phenomena without sediment. A stainless steel head tank with a stilling baffle provides a smooth flow. A fine strainer is provided in the storage tank to trap the sand sediment. The water is discharged from the channel via a built in rectangular weir to the storage tank.

A model undershot weir and bridge pier are included for local erosion demonstrations.
A transparent, inclinable flow channel through which water can be re-circulated by a pump over a mobile bed to demonstrate the whole range of bedforms from incipient particle movement to bed wash-out.
The working section of the channel is 1.55m long, 78mm wide and 110mm deep.
A water level gauge is supplied to calibrate the overshot weir.
Three different discharge rates can be selected (and measured) within the range 0.2 to 0.6 litres/sec.
The channel slope can be adjusted within the range 0-10%.

Sedimentation Studies Apparatus

The simplest type of sedimentation is the settling of a dilute suspension of particles which have little or no tendency to flocculate. In these circumstances, the prediction of clarification rates and their scale-up to plant design is relatively straightforward. 
Sedimentation is a process used widely in the clarification of water and waste water. Particles settle from suspension in different ways, depending on the concentration of the suspension and the characteristics of the particles.
Information from batch tests for such systems forms a vital part of the search for the optimum design and operation of industrial sedimentation tanks. The Sedimentation Studies Apparatus allows demonstration of these different characteristics for any chosen sediment/water system. For higher concentrations where inter-particle effects become significant and where agglomeration may take place, different regimes of settling rate occur, known as 'zone' settling A. 
Five equal sized glass cylinders are mounted vertically on a backboard incorporating measuring scales. Solutions containing different amounts of suspension can be placed in the cylinders and the differences in sedimentation rate observed by measuring the changes in height of the various solid/liquid interfaces with respect to time. Each of the cylinders may be removed from the board for washing, filling and mixing of the solid particles. 
The whole apparatus is bench-mounted and provided with back lighting. An accurate balance (not supplied) is required for weighing the solids. 
The equipment includes the following accessories necessary for a self-contained facility: stop clock, three plastic beakers of 2 litre capacity, specific gravity bottle.

Sedimentation Tank

The Sedimentation Tank allows to study the hydraulic and efficiency characteristics of the sedimentation by means of a special rectangular section tank. The unit is fitted with an ink injecting device in order to visualize the flow lines obtained in the settling tank. The sludge, which is kept in suspension in the preparation tank by a stirrer, is sent to the sedimentation tank by a variable speed peristaltic pump together with a water flow rate adjusted through a manual valve. The group is supplied with manuals which describe all parts of the unit, the installation and utilization procedures, as well as many exercises with the relative results.
