The pressure transducer is directly exposed to the combustion chamber pressure when the spark plug is inserted. The spark plug itself retains its full functionality. For experiments using cylinder pressure indication on the test engine, the normal spark plug is exchanged for a modified spark plug. This modified spark plug is fitted with a micro pressure transducer. The pressure transducer is connected to the measuring amplifier in the electronic indication system. The core component of the pressure transducer is a heat resistant piezo-electric quartz crystal, which outputs a charge signal proportional to the pressure.

The operation of these level sensing devices can readily be investigated since they may be removed from the Demonstration Unit, dismantled and re-assembled, without the attendant problems which would occur on an operational boiler. The simulated boiler itself is constructed from a clear acrylic tank and thus the demonstration unit provides a clear visual appreciation of the operating characteristics of the various level controls i.e. float operated magnetic, reed or electronic system using electrode sensors. An arrangement of up to date integrated circuits is used to simulate boiler pressure and burner control together with the sensing and control systems associated with modern boiler systems. A Boiler Water Gauge is fitted to the Boiler Drum so that possible misuse of this item can be demonstrated clearly and safely. This Gauge can also be used to demonstrate the method of changing a sight glass for such a gauge under simulated working conditions, a circumstance which can be safely taught on this Demonstration Unit. These systems would not normally all be fitted in the same boiler but are included in this unit to give the student an appreciation of the characteristics of each system. Conversion of water from the boiler into steam is simulated so that the level sensors need to operate as in a true Boiler system.

The Mini Kaplan Turbine Demonstration Unit is to be used with Mini Turbine Service Unit, and a computer. Mini Kaplan Turbine Demonstration Unit is a mini Kaplan turbine for studying the turbine characteristics with data analysis by computer. The turbine adjustable guide vanes direct water to the runner. A central block is clamped to the test beam. Vibration Absorber carries two spring steel strips which are clamped in a cantilever arrangement transversely across the test beam. Experimental module, which fits into the Vibrations frame making up part of the Universal Vibration Apparatus. With the aid of the LVDT from the cantilevers and mass system can be tuned to the same natural frequency as the surround test beam and motor exciter. Attached onto each cantilever is a set of masses, which can have their magnitude and position adjusted. Once this is achieved the resonance frequency of the original system can be observed along with the resonance frequency of the Vibration Absorber itself.
