The primary separation operation for crude oil occurs when the crude stream flows through a vessel of sufficient capacity to allow gravitational separation of the gas, liquid hydrocarbon and water phases. Gas flow passes through a secondary vertical 2-phase separator, or knock-out ports to remove any further liquids from the gas stream. Mini Plant Large Scale Three Phase Separator process trainer blends air, water and refined oil to emulate a crude oil stream. This fluid mixture then flows into a horizontal separator vessel fabricated of clear PVC. The entire trainer is controlled from a distributed control system (DCS). The separator is equipped with industry typical process instrumentation.

Gas Purification

The Gas Purification plant is complete with a control cabinet, integrated into the structure, with all the switches that are necessary for the activation of the different electrical components of the plant, a main switch off and emergency stop mushroom button. Inside the cabinet there are also the necessary protections against potential electrical faults, short circuits or drift to earth, according to the electrical regulations governing the protection of people and equipment. All elements of the Gas Purification plant are placed on a frame made of square pipes 40x40x2 mm of stainless steel. The four branches of the Gas Purification plant are in the same horizontal plane. 
The Gas Purification plant allows testing the removal of solid particles from a gas stream, through different methods:  
Dynamic settler
Static settler
Cyclonic separator, 
And comparing the three processes.
The contaminant, solid, is stored in a hopper, from where it is dosed to the process by means of an archimedes screw which is directly actuated by a gear motor.

Aerobic Digester

The equipment consists of a ten litre reactor vessel mounted on a vacuum formed plastic base, with a liquid feed pump, air supply and instrumentation for monitoring and controlling the process.
The porous liner is removable for cleaning, and a spare liner is supplied.
Waste water is drawn from a floor-standing feed tank (not supplied) by a DC motor driven peristaltic pump. Rotational speed and thus flow rate, are accurately set by a ten-turn potentiometer. The pump delivers the feed to the reactor vessel through a transparent lid.
The cylindrical wall of the reactor is made from a porous plastic material to retain the suspended solids while allowing treated water to pass through to the outer, annular exit chamber. This design allows the essential features of the aerobic treatment process to be studied without the distractions of having to settle the solids adequately enough for external recycle - a well known laboratory problem.
Air is supplied at a measured rate by a small compressor, and discharges into the base of the reactor via a spider-arm dispenser, designed to prevent blockages as well as to produce sufficient bubbling for stirring and reaction. 
Discharge is by gravity to a floor-standing product tank (not supplied).
The reactor temperature is maintained by a 3-term controller which varies power to an immersion heater within the vessel. Any temperature between ambient and +35deg C may be selected, the best conditions being a few degrees above the diurnal maximum in the user's laboratory.
The liquid level in the reactor is maintained at a constant value of 5-10 litres, by an adjustable overflow device connected to the outer annular chamber of the vessel.

Continuous Rectification

The mixed vapour contains a higher concentration of the component with the lower boiling point (ethanol). It leaves the top of the column and is condensed using a condenser and a phase separation tank. Distillation is used to separate liquid mixtures made up of individual liquids that are soluble in one another. Rectification refers to distillation in a counterflow. Part of this condensate is collected in a tank as product while the rest is fed back into the column. The mixed vapour produced then moves upwards in the column. Here, on its way downwards, it undergoes further heating and material exchange with the rising mixed vapour. Ethanol/water is recommended as the liquid mixture for the. It is fed into the column. It partially evaporates on its way to the bottom of the column where it is heated to boiling. The liquid phase moves to the bottom and can be collected in two tanks. This exchange causes the vapour phase to become richer in ethanol and the liquid phase to become richer in water.
